Years of civil war and international conflicts have left Cambodia economically and politically unstable. Due to the landmine crisis, Cambodia has the largest number of mine amputees in the world. The Cambodian government is committed to eradicating landmines; however, it cannot carry out landmine clearance programs alone. International support is needed to clear mines and pave the way for reconstruction and development.
Adopt-A-Minefield has supported mine clearance efforts in Cambodia since 1999 and began supporting projects assistance landmine survivors in 2003.
All AAM clearance projects in Cambodia are carried out by the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC). CMAC was founded in 1992 by UNTAC (United Nations Peacekeeping force for Cambodia). At that time, there were an average of 600 landmine and UXO causalities every month - an astounding rate for a country of its size. CMAC currently carries out about half of the mine clearance operations in Cambodia working throughout the country.
AAM has provided support to seven different organizations in Cambodia who are providing the full spectrum of physical and professional rehabilitation to the large number of landmine survivors. While the heath care system is still underfunded, the presence of international prosthetic and orthotic workshops throughout the country provides a foundation of support so that landmine survivors can walk again. A growing economy helps to create opportunities for survivors who are gaining marketable skills. With all programs supported by AAM, there is an emphasis on ensuring that survivors will be become self-sustaining and that the programs themselves will become more sustainable with time since survivors will continue to need assistance in Cambodia for many years to come.
