Cluster Bombs

A cluster bomb is a large canister that opens in mid-air and scatters hundreds of small submitions, or bomblets, across a wide area. These bomblets are designed to explode on impact but some fail, leaving armed bomblets littering the ground.

Cluster bombs are indiscriminate. They cannot distinguish between civilian and military targets. Their wide-area coverage and poor targeting mechanisms nearly guarantee that unintended victims will die or be injured, even when the weapons function as designed.

Cluster munitions continue to kill long after a war ends because these weapons often fail to explode on impact as designed.

 did you know
  •  Cluster munitions severely disrupt the lives and livelihoods of 400 million people worldwide
  • 85 percent of cluster bomb casualties are civilians and 23 percent are children
  • Unexploded bomblets become de facto landmines and often explode when children mistake them for toys
