| MINE RISK EDUCATION In addition to the rouine mine risk education conducted as a part of the clearance projects we sponsor, Adopt-A-Minefield has also funded several direct mine risk education programs in Colombia. Although the Colombian government signed the Mine Ban Treaty, 40 years of internal conflict has resulted in a growing landmine crisis within the country. Armed groups continue to use landmines, planting them around roads, water sources, bridges, schools, farms and in residential areas. With continued fighting, new landmines are being placed in the ground and existing minefields remain not only uncleard but also unmarked. This poses a grave threat to the local population.
In addition to the physical threat, landmines also affect the mobility of people and restrict the development of farmland. Governmental resources are very limited and simply unable to address the problem. As a result of these circumstances, the rate of mine casualties in Colombia is rapidly increasing. This is a unique and alarming trend because in most parts of the world casualties are diminishing. To address this growing crisis, Adopt-A-Minefield and Landmine Survivors Network have been working in Colombia to provide mine risk education (MRE) and survivor assistance to the communities affected most by the presence of landmines. Since no coordinated clearance activities can be conducted in the current environment, educating people about how to protect themselves is critical. According to the 2006 Landmine Monitor Report, despite the recognized need most of the municipalities and communities in Colombia have not received any MRE.
To meet these needs Adopt-A-Minefield is working with several local organizations to conduct mine risk education, including dynamic new programs designed by youth for youth. Some of these students and children are designing educational materials and projects to teach communities about the risks posed by landmines and what can be done locally to address the issue. These motivated students are working to educate and protect their own hometowns and families.
Educating at risk communities about the dangers of landmines and how to avoid them is essential and saves lives. With this new mode of action Adopt-A-Minefield is empowering local students to do exactly that. Just like you these students want to help make a tangible difference and they need your support!.This is a wonderful opportunity for you, the student community to get involved, raise funds and help your fellow students in Colombia save thousands of lives.
